After receiving professional development on promoting math literacy, Ms. Fetzer, Ms. Sierra and Mrs. Johnston’s class began a study on Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins by Eric Litwin. Magnetic number visuals and pumpkin pictures were used during group readings of the story to reinforce counting and numeral recognition. Students were expected to count, state the number of pumpkins they counted, or recognize numerals based on their level of development. Given support from their teachers, every student was able to participate in the activity successfully. Many students have carried over their new math skills into free choice time since completing this study, selecting more counting activities on their own during centers.
