UCPS receives the 2024 Employer of Choice Award

Union County Public Schools (UCPS) received the 2024 Employer of Choice Award from the Union County Chamber. Superintendent Dr. Andrew Houlihan accepted the award at the chamber’s annual gala on Dec. 5.

The Employer of Choice Award recognizes businesses committed to creating a world-class workplace for its employees and an organization where people choose to work over competing organizations.

“This award is all about Team UCPS and the amazing employees who serve our school district each day. We have nearly 5,000 employees and it is their dedication, hard work and commitment that has led us to this recognition.”

UCPS is the sixth-largest district in North Carolina and the largest employer in Union County. Over the last eight years, UCPS has expanded efforts to create a better workplace culture for employees. This includes strengthening communication channels, adding opportunities to give feedback and creating new employee recognition programs.

Senior leaders have also invested time and resources in developing employees. The district has focused on leadership development for both instructional and non-instructional staff. Through programs such as Next Stop: TeachUCPS, we have partnered with Wingate University, South Piedmont Community College and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to provide opportunities for employees to pursue teaching certifications.

“UCPS is a great place to work and we are making changes to ensure we can stay competitive, cultivate a sense of belonging and create better opportunities for continuing education,” said Dr. Kevin Plue, assistant superintendent of human resources. “We are grateful for this award and it is an incredible honor.”

UCPS consistently demonstrates leadership in the education sector through active involvement with various organizations and partnerships at local, state, and national levels. The district’s participation in conferences, such as the Personnel Administrators of North Carolina, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, and the North Carolina School Public Relations Association, allows its leaders to share best practices and contribute to state-wide educational innovation. Furthermore, UCPS partners with local businesses and the Union County Education Foundation to fund innovative projects, grant resources to educators and support student learning. This foundation serves as a critical tool in empowering teachers and advancing student outcomes.
