STEM is coming to Western Union
I am excited to share with you that we will be offering a new “special” for our students next school year. In addition to Art, Music and PE, our students will have STEM as a special every week. I am sure some of you may be asking, What is STEM? or Why a STEM class? Well, let me explain a little bit of what it is and why it is so important.
STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. All of these elements are so important as they pervade every part of our lives. STEM education helps to create critical thinkers, problem solvers and innovators. These skills can be used throughout life, regardless of the profession they choose to follow. Innovation leads to new products and processes that sustain our economy.
“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” (National Science Foundation)
Our classroom will have a “focus on fun” attitude while we try to provide activities that involve experimentation, discovery, building things, and increasing student’s natural curiosity. Students will be challenged while engaging in interesting and hands on tasks at their level.
