The Keeper Retreat was a huge success! The purpose of this program is to help students understand how valuable they are in their class, their school, and in their society. As a program, we are wanting to instill confidence and boost self-esteem so that everyone can be positive role models, in and out of the classroom. Once these students are able to see their potential they will be able to set appropriate goals for themselves, evaluate their behaviors and actions, and be a positive role model to their peers. We would also like this program to be an outlet where they can speak about their problems and successes to help them develop into their Sister’s/Brother’s Keeper.
Students stayed in the dorms at Wingate University during the retreat. They were able to participate in a tour of the campus where they learned interesting facts about the university. After the tour students went on a scavenger hunt. They had to use the information that they learned on the tour to answer questions and find clues around the campus. Students also participated in an air guitar competition, created reminder bracelets, and went to campus lake for a bonfire and dance party! Students learned how to let go of the negatives in their lives and how to see the greatness that is inside of them!
Michael Jordan, Youth Pastor at Austin Grove Baptist Church, delivered a motivating speech to everyone at the retreat! He had six major points to help us along our journey through life.
Don't let what you can't do stop you from what you can do!
The more you give the happier you will become!
We all bleed the same!
It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters!
Respond instead of reacting!
Whether you think you can or you think you can't you are right!
