STEM Instruction at Antioch

Connecting Professional Development with Student Learning

This year I have had the opportunity to teach STEM PD with Mr. Tegard to our peers.  One of the STEMS challenges was to create the highest tower they could with only index cards, the teachers then discussed the connections to curriculum.  Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Clarke took this very seriously and were able to create a 54 inch tower with only index cards.  My students came in the next morning and wanted to know what had happened with all of the index cards around the classroom.  After a quick explanation, they decided to challenge themselves to beat Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Clarke.  During their free time, they created a tower of 72 inches.  The teachers and students spent time designing, building, discussing, redesigning, and rebuilding until they reached the goal.  The boys were very excited to beat the teachers!
