Fifth graders have been ‘digging deep’ through the past already, though the school year has just begun! The first unit fifth graders study in social studies is colonization in the United States. Students learned about various Native American tribes in our new Social Studies Weekly magazines and also through interactive notetaking. Upon getting an overall idea about the differences in tribes, students chose one tribe to research further. Using notes and online sources on the fifth grade website, students gathered research on daily life for these early tribes. Students showed the knowledge they learned through a creative piece, incorporating artwork and information in a flip book. The books feature information on food, clothing, housing, regions in the US, and interesting facts. Students also reflected on why they chose their tribe and imagined what life would be like living in that tribe. Way to go, fifth grade gators, on all of your hard social studies work thus far!
