This is Tom Childers contacting you from Antioch Elementary School. Students and staff had a terrific week at school last week. I visited many classrooms last week and witnessed our staff and your children doing some amazing things.
On Wednesday, January 15th our staff will be provided with Duty Free Lunch, please volunteer if you can. Class Pictures will take place on January 15th. It is important that your child attend school on this day to be included in the class picture. The first semester ends on January 17th and Jump Rope for Heart begins.
Calling All Artists: The North Carolina Aviation Art Contest ends this week - Deadline for entries will be January 17th. Click here for full details.
There is no school on Monday, January 20th in recognition of the MLK Holiday. Tuesday, January 21st is a teacher workday.
Kindergarten Registration Begins on February 3rd. Antioch Elementary has four events that will be repeated for parents and rising Kindergarten students. We will host a school tour and open house on the following dates February 11th (6:00pm), March 9th (9:00am), April 2nd (6:00pm) and May 5th (9:00am). I would like to take a moment to discuss the possession and use of Phones and SMART watches by students. UCPS School Board Policy states:
Elementary and Middle School: Students will not possess cellular phones or electronic/media devices except pursuant to an authorized purpose or as an instructional tool under the guidance and direction of a staff member during a school activity, from the first bell of the day through the last dismissal bell. Except as identified above, cell phones must be turned off and out of sight (in backpack, pocket, or purse) at all times. Use of a cell phone is defined to include, but is not limited to phone ringing, talking on phone, taking pictures, browsing, gaming and text messaging. Any electronic watches (i.e. Apple watch) or electronic tracking devices (i.e. AngelSense) must have all recording/listening capabilities turned off or disabled.
I completely understand the desire of parents to be able to communicate with their children, however these devices must be used in accordance with UCPS board and school guidelines. Students may not use a cell phone during the school day for any reason. Students may use a SMART watch for the purpose of telling time. Students may not play games, send text messages, make calls, search the internet or otherwise utilize the phone in a manner that disrupts learning. The classroom teacher will contact a parent of any student who violates this policy to provide a warning. The student will be prohibited from bringing a similar device to school if a second offense occurs.
