This is Tom Childers contacting you from Antioch Elementary. The Governor has announced that school will not resume until May 18th. I realize that school closures are difficult on families and a closure of this length is hard to imagine. Union County Public Schools and Antioch Elementary are doing everything within our power to provide the appropriate services for students. The major obstacle that public schools across the country are trying to overcome is compliance with federal legislation relating to FAPE. This acronym is short for Free and Appropriate Public Education. Simply stated this legislation prevents public schools from providing instructional services that limits access to individuals that fall under a protected class. Online learning is limited by ALL students having the ability to access online instruction. The merits and intent of this legislation are currently being debated at the state and federal levels. Our school will continue to take direction from Union County Public Schools. Our current plan for students in grades Kindergarten through Fifth grade involves providing "Optional Work Packets" and optional work resources. I am pleased to announce that Antioch has secured additional content through IXL Learning. All students now have access to English Language Arts and Math. Students in grades Second through Fifth will also have access to Science and Social Studies content. Our staff may be sharing additional optional resources over the next few weeks. Teachers will NOT be conducting online learning to present new content until instructed to do so by our Central Services due to the previously mentioned reason. Optional Work Packets are still available at Sardis Elementary. Packets may be picked up Monday through Friday between the hours of 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. The address is 4416 Sardis Church Road, Monroe NC 28110.
While it is not a substitute for school, I do feel IXL Learning can certainly provide your child with content to continue their growth during the school closure. I have included two documents and two videos that will maximize your child's efforts and parent's understanding of this learning platform. Kindergarten Registration for the 2020 - 2021 school year will continue. Please click this link for Step by step directions. The deadline for entering the Dual Language Lottery is March 31st. Kindergarten Registration packets should be printed, completed and mailed to Antioch Elementary prior to this date. Please feel free to submit packets without the medical assessment. We realize that the current situation limits parents ability to get this completed by the March 31st deadline. Students who have not submitted completed packets WILL NOT be considered for the lottery.
