Message from Mr. Childers June 7, 2020

Hello Parents,

This is Tom Childers contacting you from Antioch Elementary. The school year is over… and what a crazy year it was. I appreciate the words of encouragement that I received from parents during this Covid-19 Pandemic. I know you are concerned about your child's education. The staff and I have evaluated this year and are working on refining our processes for the upcoming year. Teachers will not provide instruction throughout the summer however, many resources continue to be available to students including IXL Learning. Check out Antioch’s Summer Reading Website! https://sites.google.com/a/ucps.k12.nc.us/ates_kkovach/summer-reading

Keep your student engaged in learning throughout the summer!  UCPS has digital resources available:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1K_m4mJFd6zHmPI_qozBMhryyX7_DaTp4/view

I cannot predict what the 2020 - 2021 school year will hold for school our community. I do believe it will be non-traditional. There are many possibilities for August 17th, which is the first day of school. Our school could open in a traditional manner with all students returning. Our school could open with an "A - B" schedule in which some students would attend on Monday and other students attend on Tuesday. This is a model that has been used by some countries as they returned to school following the pandemic. While I cannot predict what our opening will look like at this time… I encourage each family to think about possible scenarios and build contingency plans.

The Republican National Convention is currently scheduled to be held in Charlotte during the week of August 24th. If this changes… our school calendar would change. The week of August 24th is currently a Remote Learning Week for UCPS. Click this link to see the most recent calendar approved by the UCPS Board of Education.

End of the Year Gifts from Students: There is certainly no expectation that parents/students provide staff with an end of the year gift, however please make sure that you honor the staff's wishes with regards to giving. Check information from the room parent or email your child's teacher(s) for directions.  Parents will NOT be permitted to drop items off at the school.

Virtual Tour: Shout out to Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Kovach for creating this excellent virtual tour for parents. This will be a great resource for Kindergarten and new families. Click here to view the Virtual Tour.

IXL Learning will be available throughout the summer and continues to be a terrific resource for your child. Please review the follow information to help get your child started or to enhance his or her work.
