DLI Program Information 7/28/2020

Hello Parents,

This is Tom Childers contacting you from Antioch Elementary. I realize that many of you have concerns about the re-opening of school as well as the future of the Dual Language Immersion Program. UCPS and our staff are doing everything possible to support students and keep the program going during this pandemic. I would like to take a few moments to provide you with additional information regarding the Dual Language Immersion Program.

Antioch will host one Kindergarten class this year and Mrs. Minieri will serve as the teacher. The first grade program will consist of two classes. Ms. Gomez and Ms. Gutierrez will each serve as the teacher for their respective class. Mrs. Zapata is our Co-Teacher and I am uncertain how she will be utilized at this point. Antioch is fortunate to have a Co-Teacher, particularly a teacher with previous experience in the United States. UCPS only has three Co-Teacher throughout the district due to limitations with non-citizens entering the country. Our school district is exploring ways to use the Co-Teachers to support students in  the Dual Language Spanish Immersion Program while students are attending one day per week. We are blessed to have Mrs. Diana Tamburello to support our Kindergarten and First Grade Programs if Mrs. Zapata's role shifts from Antioch to serving students across the district.

During schooling under Plan "B", students will attend school for "face to face" instruction on a limited capacity. The Immersion Program will shift to a model of Spanish exposure for Kindergarten and First Grade students. It is very likely that our staff will provide some content in English during remote learning. This strategy will ensure that students are provided with the appropriate content without creating a language barrier. The Dual Language Immersion model will resume once students return to school in a more traditional manner. It is very likely that "on-demand" instruction will be provided by various teachers within our school. I say this to prepare you in advance if your child receives a math lesson from Ms. Danson (Kindergarten) or a Reading lesson from Mrs. Lewis (First Grade).

Last year DLI students in grades second, third, fourth and fifth received daily instruction in English in the area of literacy. This model will continue in spite of budget cuts.  Mrs. Jenn Witt will serve second grade and fifth grade to provide English literacy instruction. Mrs. Benavides and Mrs. Arocha will provide English literacy instruction to third and fourth grade students. Students who qualify for AIG Reading in fourth and fifth will be served by Mrs. Sarcona (4th grade) and Mrs. Schilling (5th).

UCPS will continue to explore ways to support DLI students with language acquisition. I will notify you once I have details regarding how this support will occur.

Thank you for your continued commitment to Antioch Elementary and the Dual Language Program - working  together as one team on one mission, we are meeting needs, challenging minds and celebrating accomplishments.

Until next time… Have a great day!
