Message from Mr. Childers October 18, 2020
This is Tom Childers contacting you from Antioch Elementary. I would like to begin this weekly message by thanking the Antioch PTO and all the families that support our school. This past Wednesday our staff was treated to lunch from Panera. The staff was very appreciative of this kind gesture. I have been informed that Gatorthon was a tremendous success and our PTO raised more than $40,000 to support programs at our school. I am honored and humbled to lead a school in such an engaged and committed community.
Students will have a remote learning day on October 22nd. Teachers will provide on-demand content for students on this day as teachers conduct virtual parent conferences. Friday, October 23rd is a teacher workday and students will NOT have work shared for this day.
We are quickly closing in on October 26th. Many students will receive a new teacher on this date. Some students (22 percent) will migrate to a Virtual Academy, while other students will be changing teachers because their teacher is now a virtual teacher or the school master schedule necessitates the change. All students and parents who will be affected will receive an email communication on Monday, October 19th. I had originally hoped to provide this information sooner, however UCPS is balancing many factors and has set 10/26 as the release of information date. Virtual students will receive a message from the school and students who change face to face teachers will receive the email from the teacher. The UCPS Board of Education and our Superintendent, Dr. Houlihan are doing everything possible to create a manageable work load for teachers. All classroom teachers will have the expectation of teaching only face to face learners and virtual teachers will teach only virtual learners. The AIG schedule has been constructed to permit Mrs. Sarcona and Mrs. Schilling to have separate sections of face to face and virtual learners.
I plan to create a Virtual Academy Council which will provide representatives the opportunity to periodically meet with our staff to discuss ways to keep our virtual students connected with Antioch Elementary. More information is forthcoming in your Monday correspondence.
Virtual students with IEP's and 504's will continue to have their needs met by our staff. Specific questions regarding this can be address directly to email@example.com.
I encourage parents to review this video to guide your understanding of your child's Istation reports. Thank you to Mrs. Sherri Barber for creating this useful tool.

Devices for K-1 Students: Our school will not issue a chromebook to each Kindergarten and First Grade student. A parent who is in need of a device for their Kindergarten or First Grade student may request one using this link. I will send a confirmation email to all K/1 parents who previously requested a device. Our school should be able to distribute devices during the week on October 26th.
Afternoon Dismissal Changes:
Kindergarten and First grade students who do not have siblings in grades 2-5, may be dismissed in car rider line at 1:50pm. This process will begin on Monday, October 19th. All K-1 staff as well as TA's should assist with this process, unless TA's are supervising students. All K-1 students will come to the car rider line or bus lot. Please keep in mind that classes are meeting in the gym and do not enter the gym until class is over. A family that has a Kindergarten and Second grade student would NOT be able to pick up until 2:05 (as usual). This new process is only for families with Kindergarten or First Grade students.
Simply stated… Please do not arrive for car rider line until 2:05 pm unless you only are picking up Kindergarten and First Grade Students.
Our school is making these changes due to the anticipation of more than 400 car riders in the afternoon. The early (1:50pm) pick up of Kindergarten and First Grade Only and the use of the bus parking lot (after 2:10pm) for Fourth/Fifth Graders and Siblings will hopeful alleviate afternoon traffic congestion.

Birthday Treats will not be permitted at Antioch this year. Due to the many additional tasks required of our staff due to COVID-19, we cannot accept birthday treats of any kind in the classroom.
Personal Items: (Snacks, water bottles, lunches, homework: Sometimes students forget items at home - parents are permitted to bring prescription eye wear, prescription medicine and other items deemed essential by the school. The school will not permit the drop off lunch and homework unless the child has a special diet and our cafeteria cannot accommodate the child's needs. Parents will only be permitted to drop off clothing items if the child's clothing becomes soiled during the school day. All students should bring coats, jackets and face covering daily at the beginning of the day. These items will not be permitted to be dropped off during the day. The school will provide a face covering for your child if they forget their face covering at home. Students should bring a sweatshirt or light jacket to school. It may be very warm outside however the classrooms might be chilly with the reduced number of students in classrooms. I encourage parents to write your child's name in their jacket. Our school has dozens of unclaimed items of clothing each year.
