Message from Mr. Childers

October 31, 2021

Hello Parents,

This is Tom Childers contacting you from Antioch Elementary. On Friday, I followed through with my promise to the students and I kissed the pig. You may watch the video here. Our 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade students will take the first Math NC Check-in on Thursday. Please make sure that your child arrives at school on time and is rested.

I need your help. Each day we have a significant number of students who arrive late to school. Your child is considered Tardy for school if he or she is not in class when the 7:30am bell rings. I realize that traffic is difficult… the majority of late arrivals are NOT due to traffic. When your child is late it places him or her at a disadvantage for morning work and procedures. This also causes a significant disruption within the classroom and delays the begin of the instructional day. I will soon begin follow up with families who have chronically tardy students.

Several parents have reached out to me regarding absences that appeared on their child's report card. Please keep in mind that if your child is tardy they are typically marked as absent and the code must be changed by our staff. This is a time consuming process and yet another reason for everyone to strive to arrive at school on time each day. Please review the information below regarding excused absences from the UCPS Board Policy Manual.

EXCUSED ABSENCES

When a student must miss school, a written excuse signed by a parent or guardian must be presented to the school after the student returns from an absence. The Board reserves the right for the school administration, after consultation with the Superintendent or designee, to request additional documentation to excuse an absence. Absences will be coded as unexcused until the written excuse is received. Absences due to extended illnesses may also require a statement from a physician. For the purposes of this Policy, extended illnesses are those which result in absences in excess of five (5) consecutive school days or in excess of five (5) cumulative days within a single semester. An absence may be excused for any of the following reasons:

  1. personal illness or injury that makes the student physically unable to attend school (illnesses includes but is not limited to physical, emotional, and mental health);
  2. isolation ordered by the State Board of Health;
  3. death in the immediate family. For purposes of this Policy, immediate family will include parents/guardians, siblings and grandparents;
  4. medical or dental appointment;
  5. participation under subpoena as a witness or a party in a court proceeding;
  6. a minimum of two days each academic year for observance of an event required or suggested by the religion of the student or the student’s parent(s);
  7. college visits (up to two per academic year in both the Junior and Senior year once the student provides verification of the visit) and scholarship interviews;
  8. participation in a valid educational opportunity, such as travel, additional college visits or service as a legislative or Governor’s page, with prior approval from the principal/designee;
  9. pregnancy and related conditions or parenting, when medically necessary; or
  10. a minimum of two days each academic year for visitation with the student’s parent or legal guardian, if the student is not identified as at risk of academic failure because of unexcused absences and the student’s parent or legal guardian (a) is an active duty member of the uniformed services, and (b) has been called to duty for, is on leave from, or has immediately returned from deployment to a combat zone or combat support posting.

All other absences are considered unexcused.

In the case of any absence the student will be expected to make up his/her work. The teacher will determine when work is to be made up. The student is responsible for finding out what assignments are due and completing them within the specified time period.

Due to Covid Protocols we ask for your cooperation to make note of the following:

  • Parents will not be permitted to walk students to class or have lunch with their child.
  • UCPS is permitting Field Trips at this time. Antioch will only participate in on campus trips for the first semester and we are currently scheduling off campus trips for the second semester. Off campus trips are subject to cancellation based on safety concerns.
  • All parent-teacher meetings, 504, and IEP meetings will be conducted virtually again this year.
  • Our school will not accept items that students forgot at home after the 7:30am bell unless the item is critical (medicine, prescription eye glasses or lunch for students  who have dietary restrictions).
  • Our school will provide a new water bottle for any student who forgets their bottle at home.
  • Our school will provide a face covering for any student who needs it. Please do not attempt to drop these off at school after the 7:30am bell.
  • Our school will continue to utilize the doorbell camera to communicate with visitors.

COVID Support Plan UCPS and Antioch Elementary will offer a comprehensive support plan to assist students if they are quarantined from school. The plan includes a tiered approach.

  • Tier 1 - Your child's teacher of record or instructional assistant will provide assignments and resources for your child while quarantined. Virtual Instruction ("live" or "on-demand") will only be provided in the event that the entire class is excluded from school.
  • Tier 2 - Antioch Elementary will offer tutoring support from 3pm - 5pm on school days. This support can be accessed by clicking the COVID Support link on the school website calendar. This resource is limited ONLY to students who are quarantined from school. Our staff will answer questions and explain concepts. K-2 and 3-5 have separate links.

Parents who are checking out students for early dismissal must do so by 1:15pm. It may be extremely difficult to dismiss your child after that time due to classroom dismissal procedures.

 Please include the following information when emailing me with a question or concern.

  • Child's Name
