This week we will be supporting the UCPS initiative, “Start with Hello.” This program comes from The Sandy Hook Promise from Sandy Hook Elementary School. “Start with Hello” began because in every school in the nation, there are young people who suffer silently from feeling left out, alone and/or invisible. By simply saying “hello,” you can help someone feel seen, accepted and safe. This week we will encourage students to make a difference with their peers in a simple, fun and impactful ways. At New Salem we all recognize that our greatest strength is our small community network. This week we will enhance our community by encouraging students to ensure that we are kind to all and encouraging team and not allowing students to become isolated.

Monday is “Hey day” – Staff and students wear a name tag all day to focus on greeting each other by name.

Tuesday is “Random Acts of Kindness” Students will write statements of kindness to each other on different colored cut out hand shapes. These hands will become the “leaves” on our Kindness Tree in the Café. Also, everyone is asked to wear your favorite color shirt on Tuesday.

Wednesday is “Green Out Day” – wear anything green. “Start with Hello’s” theme color is green.

Thursday is “Fave Shirt Day” – wear your favorite shirt. Students will recognize differences and similarities they have with others.

Friday is “Team/College Day” – wear your favorite team/college logo or colors. Students will focus on their futures.
