Message from Mr. Ferguson

Today we kicked off the Spooky Sprint Fun Run Fundraiser. Your child will bring home a orange packet giving you all the details. Let’s make this year our best fun run yet! The money raised is critical to our success. We use almost all of the Spooky Sprint to fund tutors for our students who are struggling the most and this year we are using the funds to also fund a 4th grade math tutor. Over the past 5 years we have observed that our students struggle to maintain proficiency on the 4th grade math test compared to the 3rd grade math test. This is a trend that happens across UCPS and the state. To combat that we have hired Mrs. Austin, a former New Salem teacher to tutor all of our 4th grade students 4 days a week in a small group during their math class. She will be reteaching and enhancing their learning on grade level math content. The only students not getting this service in 4th grade will be AIG math students who are already learning math in a smaller group. As you can tell we are using your funds very strategically and I thank you in advance for helping us make this happen.

Tuesday, October 8th is an early release day. Students will be dismissed at 11:00.
Wednesday, October 9th is a teacher workday. There is no school on the 9th.
Friday, October 11th is our Spooky Sprint Fun Run.

Finally, thank you car rider parents for being supportive of us holding parents accountable for having the green cards visible in the car rider line. We appreciate your understanding. We tightened up this expectation because we have to ensure we are getting students to the right guardian. Recently, our school had a suspicious vehicle on campus and we investigated. Upon investigation we found that the vehicle went through our car rider line and did not pick any students up, which is odd. Situations like this make me pause and reflect to ensure our processes are tight enough to prevent something bad from happening. Since that odd situation we asked that parents post their green cards in their windows and we have even assessed our exterior camera systems and have made some upgrades. We value having a safe school and we want to be proactive to keep it that way. Thank you for your support in that process.

Regards,

Mr. Ferguson
