Sandy Ridge Elementary has experienced significant growth since adopting the Leader in Me program in 2017. Inspired by Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the school has worked to empower students by developing their leadership skills and sense of responsibility.
In 2022, Sandy Ridge achieved Lighthouse Certification, a prestigious recognition of the school’s successful integration of leadership principles across all grade levels. This accomplishment reflected the commitment of both staff and students to fostering a leadership-focused culture. To support the program’s growth, the school formed an action team for new teachers and staff. This team provides guidance and mentorship to help educators effectively implement the Leader in Me framework in their classrooms.A key component of the school’s success is its school-wide Wildly Important Goal (WIG) focused on service learning. Each grade level selects a service project every month, giving students the opportunity to develop leadership skills while contributing to the community. In addition, many grade levels now host student-led conferences, where students reflect on their academic progress and set goals for the future. These conferences empower students to take ownership of their learning and engage their families in the process. One of the unique aspects of Sandy Ridge's Leader in Me journey is the role students play in teaching others about the program. During school events, students share their knowledge of leadership principles with peers, teachers, and parents, serving as ambassadors for the program. The Parent Lighthouse Team has also been instrumental in providing feedback and support. Families are encouraged to attend school events, where they can see students demonstrate their learning and leadership skills in action through presentations and service projects.Through these initiatives, Sandy Ridge Elementary has built a strong school culture where leadership, service, and community engagement are at the heart of the educational experience. The school’s journey from adopting Leader in Me in 2017 to becoming a Lighthouse School in 2022 is a testament to the impact of leadership on the entire school community.
