On Monday, Aug. 29, about 40,700 UCPS students returned to the classroom for their first day of school.

As students made their way to their new classes, met their teachers and made new friends, school hallways that had been empty for months were now bustling with activity throughout the district.

"I want to welcome back all of our 40,000 plus students," said Superintendent Dr. Andrew Houlihan." I visited nine schools today and I saw teachers setting expectations, students engaged in learning and staff supporting our schools. We are off to a great start. We do ask that our parents be patient as we see an increase in traffic."
