UCPS is looking for reading buddies, become a Read with U volunteer
UCPS is seeking volunteers who can spare 30 minutes a week to read with students in person. Your time, commitment, and support can help students develop a love for reading and boost their confidence. Since the program's launch in 2017, Superintendent Dr. Andrew Houlihan has been an active volunteer of Read with U.
“I am encouraging UCPS staff to be reading buddies and calling on all community members to get involved again this year,” said. Dr. Houlihan. “The initiative helps place an additional emphasis on the district-wide focus on improving literacy proficiency rates amongst our youngest learners while building a strong community connection within our schools.”
Additionally, Principal Maxie Johnson of Wingate Elementary shared his perspective on the program.
“At Wingate Elementary, we're firm believers in the extraordinary impact of reading. The Read with U Program not only influences our students, but it creates a culture within our community. As a result, students can increase their enjoyment of reading, improve their comprehension and develop success through literacy," said Johnson. "We want the community to join us in empowering our students. Together, we'll shape the future, one page at a time, one child at a time.”
