
About Unionville Elementary

Unionville is an elementary school with a Global Focus. All students in grades 1-5 participate in global studies classes during their C-SPAM rotation. Additionally, parents may choose to enroll their children in the Spanish Immersion program which began here in 2013. Students enter the Spanish Immersion program in kindergarten and remain in these classes throughout elementary school. Unionville also has international teachers who teach in both English and Spanish. These teachers are provided through a partnership with Participate Corporation of Chapel Hill, NC.

Dr. Sharyn VonCannon (Principal)
About Dr. VonCannon
Dr. VonCannon started her professional career as a teacher assistant in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. After obtaining her teaching degree from UNC Charlotte, she taught in CMS for one year prior to coming to Union County where she taught Kindergarten, first and second grades at Indian Trail Elementary. In 1999, while teaching at Indian Trail she received her National Board Teacher Certification. Dr.VonCannon taught First and Second grade in Stanly County for the next four years before returning to Union County Schools as the assistant principal at Unionville Elementary.
She received her Masters's Degree in School Administration in May of 2006 from UNC Charlotte and was named the Principal of Unionville Elementary on January 4, 2007. She earned her Doctorate in Superintendent Leadership from Wingate University. Dr. VonCannon is a part-time professor for Wingate University in both the graduate and undergraduate programs. She enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters, as well as her two grandchildren, whether on the ball field or the mission field. Unionville is a place that Dr. VonCannon is proud to call "home." Dr. VonCannon was named 2019-2020 UCPS Principal of the Year.

Jessica Conklin (Assistant Principal)
About Mrs. Conklin
Mrs. Conklin joined Unionville Elementary School in 2017, following four years of service with Anson County Schools, four years of service teaching in an independent school district in Ohio, and two years of service teaching with Hoke County Schools here in North Carolina. Her career began at Rockfish Hoke Elementary, where she taught Kindergarten for two years, before taking an opportunity to move to Ohio to teach Kindergarten there. She taught Kindergarten in Ohio for four years and then moved back to her hometown in North Carolina to begin her family and plant her roots.
Mrs. Conklin grew up in Anson County and graduated from Anson High School. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of East Carolina in Elementary Education with a specialization in teaching reading K-12. This specialty area informs her leadership and teaching approach, as she views literacy as the foundation of academic progress. Mrs. Conklin was awarded the North Carolina Principal Fellows scholarship and earned her master’s degree in Educational Administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2018.
Mrs. Conklin views a collaborative school environment as the key to creating successful teachers and students. She believes partnerships with parents and community stakeholders are essential to enriching the experience at Unionville Elementary.
During her free time, Mrs. Conklin enjoys reading, making memories with her husband and their two boys, taking family beach trips, and spending time with family and friends. Mrs. Conklin is looking forward to being an integral part of the success of Unionville Elementary this year!
