School Report Card

  • Dear Walter Bickett Families:

In addition to the regular updates about your student’s academic progress through progress reports, report cards, and regular and open communication between families and teachers, we also provide a yearly update on our school’s achievements through the North Carolina School Report Card.

The North Carolina Report Card data is available for our school district and for the state’s education system. Data available includes important information about school and student performance, class size, attendance, school safety, instructional resources, access to technology, target goals met with federal Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs), and teacher qualifications.

Here at WBES, we have begun making shifts in our instructional approach to support the academic growth, development, and proficiency of our K-5 students. We will continue to closely monitor the impact of instruction and classroom interventions on student performance and give professional learning opportunities to our teachers to continue this work towards reaching our School Improvement goals for the year.

We have set the following goal for Walter Bickett Elementary this year:

    • Focusing on student and teacher growth mindset, academic performance data will show at least a 20% proficiency increase across all content areas, with a laser focus on literacy instruction.

Walter Bickett Elementary received a School Performance Grade of D and a growth designation of Met Growth for the 2023-2024 school year. Although we are committed to improving this score, it is important to remember that just as no one single score or grade tells the whole story of a student, neither does it tell you everything about the performance of our school or the opportunities that our school provides.

Our students need to experience higher achievement levels, but it will require hard work on the part of staff, students and families. Here are some strategies Walter Bickett Elementary will be implementing:

    • Leader in Me
    • Literacy Plan
    • Positive Behavior Incentive System

Parent engagement is at the heart of our school improvement efforts. Here are some ways you can help:

    • Make sure that your student is prepared and attends school each day.
    • Monitor your student’s homework.
    • Monitor the progress your student is making and attend meetings with your student’s teacher(s).

I encourage you to explore the school report card at www.ncreportcards.org. If you have further questions about the report card or our school improvement goals and initiatives, please feel free to call the school.

    Sincerely,

    Alfred Leon, Principal
