Turkey
Mrs. Evanko's fifth grade class participated in a Globalization Project designed to introduce the country and culture of Turkey. Mrs. Evanko's husband had the opportunity to live there for two years as a child, so therefore a lot of personal memories and encounters were shared. Mrs. Evanko's fifth grade class participated in an online program where the students received instruction in learning the Turkish language. After looking at several Turkey maps, photographs, postcards, books, and magazines, the students had the opportunity to design posters. They had the flexibility to choose which part of the Turkish culture they wanted to display on their poster.
Mrs. Evanko's class also participated in the Turkish Word of the Day. A word would be displayed on the interactive board and students would write it down with the English translation. They could hear how the word was pronounced and it would be used in a sentence. The students enjoyed pronouncing these different words and expressions. Students claimed that their language was difficult to pronounce, but the students were made aware that our language may be difficult to others.
