School History

  • Weddington Middle School first opened its doors in August 1998. In 1999, Weddington Middle was named a School of Excellence and has maintained that honor for the past eleven years. In 2010, Weddington Middle ranked first in the State of North Carolina, among traditional schools, in reading and math scores, as evidenced by end-of-grade test scores.

During the early to mid-2000's, as a result of the population boom in Union County, the school's enrollment peaked at over 1,700 students, compared to the less than 1,000 students attending when the school initially opened. Since 1998, Weddington Middle School has split its student population on two occasions to help form Marvin Ridge Middle School in 2006 and again in 2008 with the opening of Cuthbertson Middle School. Currently, our student enrollment stands at approximately 1,050 students. Students from the surrounding communities and townships of Wesley Chapel, Weddington, Matthews and Monroe attend WMS.

At Weddington Middle, we strive to ensure student success. We have fully embraced the middle school philosophy of teaming our students, which allows for positive, supportive relationships between students and teachers. We are also able to provide a varied and comprehensive offering of electives and extracurricular activities. Our exceptional faculty and staff, as well as our outstanding students, set us apart from the rest. We also enjoy an active Parent Teacher Student Organization and are grateful to the many involved parents and community members at Weddington Middle School.
