CATA earns International Baccalaureate authorization

In a momentous achievement, Central Academy of Technology and Arts (CATA) has secured its place among the prestigious ranks of International Baccalaureate (IB) World Schools for the Diploma Programme. It has become one of just two schools in Union County Public Schools, Marvin Ridge High being the other, to provide this program, creating new opportunities for students and faculty.

Superintendent Dr. Andrew Houlihan said, "Principal Kevin Beals and his team at CATA have displayed exceptional dedication toward achieving this distinction for their students. The IB authorization strengthens our district's commitment to providing forward-thinking education at an elevated level. We are immensely proud of this accomplishment."

CATA was a natural fit for the Diploma Programme, as it already offered the International Academy for ninth and 10th graders, a pathway providing prerequisite courses for IB instruction in junior and senior years.

"Starting next year, the International Academy students at CATA will have the opportunity to enroll in IB courses. The two-year program will allow them to complete all the requirements for their high school diploma, earn their IB diploma and possibly receive college credits," said Beals.

Becoming an IB World School is a multistep process with specific goals and timelines. The process starts with an initial inquiry and continues through the candidate stage, application submission, evaluation and final authorization. Schools must meet IB standards in curriculum, teaching methods, assessments and administration. Achieving it reflects the dedication and commitment of the entire school community, from the educators who create innovative lesson plans to the families who support learning at home. Everyone played a role in this remarkable journey.

"This is a direct result of the hard work and efforts of our IB teachers and staff, district leadership and our amazing IB Coordinator, Emily Watts," said Beals. "This news also means that students from all parts of Union County will have the opportunity to benefit from a well-rounded IB education that focuses on academic, personal and social growth."

The Diploma Programme is a challenging curriculum that helps students become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and compassionate global citizens. CATA's authorization brings exciting prospects for educators to collaborate and grow. By engaging with the IB community, they'll have access to resources and best practices, enhancing their teaching and benefiting their students.

"We are also excited that students in other academies can benefit from our IB course offerings. We have many students who love the challenge of a more rigorous curriculum and now will be able to offer IB classes in addition to the vast number of advanced placement courses currently available," said Beals.
