Supporting student well-being at UCPS

Union County Public Schools (UCPS) is committed to supporting the diverse needs of its students with a range of services that promote mental health, social-emotional learning and overall well-being.

Student Support Services team

The UCPS Student Support team has dedicated staff who help ensure students are healthy, safe, and ready to learn. This team includes school counselors, nurses, social workers and mental health therapists. They also work on school safety, social and emotional learning, and student discipline. Together, they ensure each school is a supportive place where students can succeed, with help available when needed.

Teletherapy and mental health support

To meet students' evolving needs, UCPS currently offers a number of mental health therapy options for students through in-person opportunities with therapists employed by UCPS, the Department of Health and Human Services' Behavioral Health Collaborative and Carolina Parenting. UCPS also offers teletherapy services through Atrium Health for those in grades 6–12. These services allow students to connect with licensed mental health professionals, providing flexible, on-demand assistance to address stress, anxiety and personal challenges. It is a referral-based service, and parents must consent to it. If students need mental health therapy, their parents should contact their school counselor.

Parent Education Series

Online recordings of previous Parent Education Series workshops are available. These resources equip parents with tools to address important and often challenging topics. The workshops cover vital issues such as suicide awareness, vaping, social media safety, anxiety management and family wellness. They help families raise awareness of potential risks, recognize warning signs and engage in open conversations with their children.

Emergency services and support

For urgent mental health needs, UCPS offers several resources, including the Say Something App for reporting safety concerns. Parents and students can access various 24/7 hotlines, such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Optum Emotional Support Help Line, and the National Domestic Violence Hotline, ensuring help is always available.
