End of Course Testing and Exit Standards
-
End-of-Course Tests( EOC) are North Carolina developed tests aligned with the objectives in the Standard Course of Study.Exit Standards: Union County Public Schools requires a student to score a Level III (with one standard error of measurement) or above on three end-of-course (EOC) assessments. The three required EOC assessments are Algebra I, Biology, and English II. A retest is administered to those students who do not score a Level III and above on the regular test. If a student does not score a Level III or above on the retest and has passed the course, he or she may be brought before a review panel to determine mastery of the material and make one of the following recommendations: repeat the course, remediate and retest using a benchmark assessment, or approve mastery.
PLAN is a diagnostic assessment that indicates strengths and areas of need to help a student’s progress toward college and career readiness. PLAN can be used as a predictor of performance for the ACT. The assessment is part of the state testing requirement and is administered to all 10th grade students.
The PLAN program helps 10th graders build a solid foundation for future academic
and career success. As a comprehensive guidance resource it helps students:
- Measure their current academic development
- Explore career/training options
- Make plans for the remaining years of high school and post-graduation years.
The WorkKeys system is used to help students understand how they can improve their skills for better-paying jobs. Scores help employers determine whether individuals are qualified for positions.
The ACT test measures what students have learned in their courses and measures their skills in English, math, science and reading. The ACT helps students:
- Understand what they need to learn next so they can build rigorous high school course plans.
- Identify career areas that align with their interests.

SPCC and CPCC administer the ACCUPLACER.

Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is an abbreviated form of the SAT and is designed to give eligible students an opportunity to practice taking a test which is similar but one hour shorter than the SAT. It is administered in October, and the scores for 11th graders are used to determine if a student qualifies for a National Merit Scholarship competition.
Scholastic Assessment Test I (SAT I) is used as a college admissions test. The SAT tests the reading, writing and mathematics skills that you learn in school and that are critical for success in college and beyond. Each section of your SAT (critical reading, mathematics and writing) will be scored on a 200- to 800-point scale, for a possible total of 2400. You’ll also get two “subscores” on the writing section: a multiple-choice score from 20 to 80, and an essay score from 2 to 12. Most students take the SAT test in the spring of their junior year.
Scholastic Assessment Test II (SAT II) is recommended or required by some colleges and universities. The SAT Subject Tests offer you an additional opportunity to show colleges what you know and what you know you can do. The SAT II consist of a set of more than 20 different tests focusing on specific disciplines such as English, History and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Foreign Languages. Each Subject Test lasts one hour and consists entirely of multiple-choice questions, except for the Writing Test, which has a 20-minute essay section in addition to a 40-minute multiple-choice section.Review Sites
