Policy Guidelines for Athletes
-
All athletes are required to maintain the highest standard of conduct and behavior on the school campus, in the classroom, at practice, and during athletic contests.
- Athletes are to be students first and athletes second. Class work must be maintained on as high a level as the athlete is capable of performing.
- Profanity will not be tolerated at any time or place.
- Student athletes are subject to random drug screening.
- The use or possessions of alcohol, drugs, or other controlled substances will result in suspension from the team for the remainder of the sports season. (Exception: Random Drug Test)
- Athletes will treat all faculty members with respect. If improper behavior is reported to the coach, the athlete will be disciplined by the coach.
- Athletes receiving a second out of school suspension will be removed from the team. First time out of school suspension may result in team dismissal as determined by the principal and coach.
- Any time an athlete is in uniform or on a team trip, he/she is representing Porter Ridge High School and must act responsibly and demonstrate good character.
- All students must have a physical exam before trying out or participating in any game or practice.
- Athletes are to attend at least one half day of school on the day of an athletic contest.
- Athletes are to practice every day. Every practice is important; even if injured, the athlete can learn from observation.
- An athlete cannot quit one sport to start another sport. If he/she quits, he/she must wait until that season is over before trying out for the next sport.
- Scholastic and attendance requirements for eligibility are set by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and must be applied to all athletes - this includes passing 3 out of 4 classes the previous semester as well as meeting the local promotion standard for cumulative course credits.
- A student can be promoted at the end of the first semester if the student was ineligible for sports at the beginning of the school year because he/she failed to meet local promotion standard, but passed enough classes in the first semester to now be classified at the next grade level. The student will remain in the same homeroom they started in, but will attain eligibility for athletics.
- If an athlete becomes ineligible during a sports season for any reason, he/she also becomes ineligible to letter in that sport for that season.
- Any coach who has additional requirements or expectations must explain them to his/her athletes at the start of the season. A coach may require a higher standard, but never a lower one. Additional standards must be approved by the principal and athletic director.
- All school rules apply to athletes while representing PRHS, including spectators at AWAY events.
North Carolina Athletic Association Academic Requirements
A student must have passed a minimum load of work during the preceding semester to be eligible at any time during the present semester. A minimum load is defined as three (3) courses for schools on the “block” format. All students must also meet local promotion standards, set by the local Board of Education.
The sports that are offered at Porter Ridge High School are: football, basketball, soccer, swimming, cross-country, golf, track (winter and spring), volleyball, baseball, wrestling, softball, tennis, lacrosse and cheerleading.
