Back to School
-
The Back to School Resource page is full of information and resources for both students and parents. Please be sure to look at all resources you can access through the general topics on the menu to the left.
Each page includes information, along with links, to support both students and parents.
Porter Ridge High School staff is excited to see our students and to get back to learning. We consider parents to be partners in this process and hope that you will let us know what additional information we can provide for you. We will continue to encourage our high school students to gain independence by communicating with their teachers, counselors, and administrators with any questions, concerns, or problems.
This page will continue to have information added as we increase resources.
UCPS has implemented a Technology Fee to support keeping Chromebook devices working and to cover accidental damage. All students must pay a $30 Technology Fee. You can pay using Infinite Campus (the replacement for Power School) or bring cash/check to school. See the link below on how to access Infinite Campus UCPS should be making contact with families about Infinite Campus and paying technology fees.
INFINITE CAMPUS INFORMATION <--click for document, schedules will be posted here on 8/15 and the required technology fee can be paid here.
Be sure to follow our PRHS School Information on our website, Facebook, and Instagram accounts, in addition to reading the Pirate Press, our digital newsletters. Please remember that we use our website, Pirate Press, and social media as our main form of communication. We email our newsletter once per week during the school year to the parent email address provided.
** If you are not getting the Pirate Press email (mid summer edition sent out 7-24-25) please contact Ms. Lawwill (carolyn.lawwill@ucps.k12.nc.us ) to verify your email address. Parents are expected to keep an up to date email address, street address, and phone number with the school for communication, and for emergency purposes.
2025-26 School Year
Welcome to the PRHS 2025-2026 school year! We have some Back to School Information for Porter Ridge High School Families:
We wanted to highlight a few things for you here.
- School starts on Monday 8/25. All students should be on campus by 7:55 am as first period starts at 8:10am. You may drop your students off as early as 7:45 am.
- Student schedules will be available via Infinite Campus, the replacement for Power School, on Friday 8/16. (We will show our 9th graders how to access this and their schedule during Freshmen Orientation that day 8/15).
- On the first day of school, students should report directly to their first period class. If a student is not able to look their schedule up on Infinite Campus ahead of time, they should report to the cafeteria and there will be staff there to help them. Our suggestion for students who do access their schedule online is to take a screenshot of it so that they can access it from that screenshot when they arrive at school.
- Students who enrolled this summer may not be able to view their schedule on their device - they should report to the cafeteria and see a staff member. We will get them a printed copy of their schedule to use if they do not get this at the Family Open House on 8/22.
- If your child has an error in their schedule please follow this link for information on how and when to request a schedule correction. Please know that we do not change schedules for other reasons.
- Leadership at Porter Ridge High
- Porter Ridge High School is a Leadership High School where we work to make sure students can Lead Themselves first, and then lead others next.
- Students work with Advisors two times per week to think about future Careers/College and their plans to make their goals happen.
- Students reflect on what their strengths and accomplishments are and will continue to highlight those in the digital portfolio that they create during high school. This portfolio can go with them to college or career!
- Students build good habits that will last a lifetime – like “Be Proactive”, “Begin with the End in Mind”, and “Put First Things First” – in both their classes and extracurricular activities.
- Through instruction and high school activities our students move toward being innovative leaders, resilient problem-solvers, skilled collaborators, effective communicators, and key contributors.
- School/Family Communication
- PRHS uses a weekly newsletter to keep parents informed of what goes on at school – the Pirate Press. It is emailed to the main email address we have on file. We send mid-summer, early August, and then weekly newsletters as school starts. If you or someone you know is not receiving them, please call the school and update your information.
- ** If you are not getting the Pirate Press email (one was sent on 8/7) please contact Ms. Lawwill (carolyn.lawwill@ucps.k12.nc.us ) to verify your email address. Parents are expected to keep an up to date email address, street address, and phone number with the school for communication, and for emergency purposes.
- The newsletter is also added to Facebook and Instagram each week, and back editions are on our website. Please follow us on social media. The majority of our posts are on IG.
- Students will also have access to a student/staff-only google doc that posts announcements submitted from clubs/teachers/athletics, etc... Students are expected to read this and their UCPS email accounts every 1-2 days.
- Transportation Information
- Car-Rider: If you are dropping your child off at school please expect slightly longer lines at car-rider drop-off during the first two weeks of school. We strongly encourage you to arrive on campus by 7:45am to ensure your child is to class on time. This is a good guideline to follow all year long. Please follow all directions of staff as we utilize the whole front lane to drop students off in the morning. In the afternoon your student will walk to your car – most parents text their location in the line.
- Bus-Rider: Please sign up for the Edu-Log Parent Portal for bus transportation. Your child can get their Bus Boarding Pass through this app. You can get more information, along with how to download the app at the UCPS Transportation website. We will be able to assist you with this at Open House on 8/22 if you need help. It is so IMPORTANT that your child is at their bus stop 20 minutes early each day. We would suggest a little earlier the first two weeks of school.
- Student-Drivers: All student drivers MUST have a parking pass to enter the student lot. This means that they must purchase and pick up their parking pass before school starts. Parking passes are available for sale starting 8/8 and can be picked up on 8/22 during open house. If a student cannot attend Open House they should email Dr. Wall to make alternate arrangements ( josh.wall@ucps.k12.nc.us). Students should arrive to park by 7:45am. Students must come directly into the school on arrival – there is no loitering in the parking lot.
- Eating Lunch and Breakfast: Let's keep all of our students READY for LEARNING this year by ensuring they have a nutritious lunch. Learning is always better when we have lots of energy to think and problem solve. All students are welcome to bring their lunch each day. Students can also buy breakfast and lunch from the school cafeteria. Please know that NO outside vendor food can be brought to school during the lunch period. Students who are bringing their lunch should have it with them when they arrive to school. There are three important links for our families when using our cafeteria:
- If you need help with paying for school meals please Apply for Free/Reduced Meals here:
- If you want to set up an online payment account to put money in your child's lunch account click here (This is a new payment system: https://www.payschoolscentral.com/
- We strongly encourage you to apply for Free/Reduced Meals if there is any chance you may qualify. Each year we have students accumulating debt in the cafeteria who could have qualified for free/reduced meals if they had applied. This debt does not go away at the end of the year, we roll it over into fees owed the next year. If your child qualifies for free/reduced meals, they can also have the tech fee waived by showing their approval letter to our bookkeeper, who will waive the tech fee.
- Technology Use
- Chromebooks are issued to all students so that teachers can plan instruction that may include incorporation of materials online. Please know that this is only a part of the instructional plans. Students are responsible for their Chromebooks and should treat them with care.
- UCPS has a Technology Fee of $30 each year that all students must pay. The link will be posted here as soon as it is available. This fee will help to cover accidental damage, and allows the district to repair Chromebooks more quickly.
- Students must pay the Tech Fee in order to get their Chromebook. We strongly encourage you to apply for Free/Reduced Meals if there is any chance you may qualify. If your child qualifies for free/reduced meals, they can also have the tech fee waived by showing their approval letter to our bookkeeper, who will waive the tech fee.
- Do you owe past technology bills for repairs/lost items? This info was emailed home in early August, but you can also check when Infinite Campus, the replacement to Power School, is available.
- Cell phones are permitted for student use in between classes and during lunch. However, cell phones must be turned off and put AWAY during all class periods. This is to enhance the learning environment for all students.
- We have specific behavioral expectations for students to keep their cell phone with them during the day. Students may not use it to harass other students, to record other students or teachers without their knowledge, or to violate the PRHS or UCPS Code of Conduct in any way. The first time a student device is taken, the student will get it back at the end of the day. The second time an parent will have to come pick it up.
- Chromebooks are issued to all students so that teachers can plan instruction that may include incorporation of materials online. Please know that this is only a part of the instructional plans. Students are responsible for their Chromebooks and should treat them with care.
- Beginning of School Year Forms: On Tuesday 8/26, all students will meet in Pirate Advisory (listed as "Homeroom" on their schedule). They will go to Pirate Advisory after second period and teachers will explain that to the students. In Advisory they will learn more about PRHS and will have a review of important rules and procedures. You can access the Codes of Conduct here so that you can review them as well. Students will bring home three paper forms on Tuesday 8/26, the rest of the forms needed are available online by clicking here: online forms
- Supply lists for students’ classes will be on the syllabus for the class, however, supply lists may not be definite until the first day of school. To access the syllabus (after 8/25), go to the PRHS website, click on the 'I want to' button in the right hand side, click on staff directory, and find your teacher's name. There is a link to the classroom canvas page in this part of the directory.
- Dress Code
- PRHS does have dress code guidelines as we believe that dressing for school may be different than dressing for other events… We want out students to Dress for Success and be sure to check out the guidelines before you shop or pick out your back to school clothes. See the information in our PRHS Student Handbook on page 21. If you have questions stop in at Open House to ask in advance or email your counselor or administrator.
- Vapes/Tobacco and tobacco-less products – Vapes are an issue with teenagers everywhere today. Please help us keep our school a healthy environment for ALL students by having a direct conversation with your child that vapes are prohibited on school campus and if a student is found to have a vape we have strict consequences. We suggest that you have this conversation frequently and ask your child to clean out their book bag to make sure this will not be an issue.
- Freshmen Orientation
- Students only – 1:30 PM -3:00 PM Friday 8/15. This will be an activity based orientation where students will access their schedules, use maps to find their classrooms, and learn some important information about high school!
- Pirate Family Open House
- Access Class Schedules on Infinite Campus, meet teachers, schedule pick-up (if you don't have access on your phone), Spirit Wear, Bus Transportation (sign up for the app), Pay Fees, Parking Pass Pick Up, and more.....
- New 10-12 grade students will be able to have guided tours
- All Students and families welcome… including 9th grade families….
