Battle of the Books

Room: Media CenterThe purpose of the Battle of the Books is to encourage continued reading for the enjoyment of all students at the high school level. The game-style competition format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base.
A committee from the North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA) creates an annual list of 15 books based on NCSLMA member recommendations. The books are selected based on their literary merits, and the committee is careful to choose books that vary in length, difficulty, and subject matter.
Meetings: During club meetings, students will discuss the books and practice answering trivia questions about them. The book list for the program contains 15 books. Team members are asked to read all of the books on the list in order to prepare for the competitions. Beginning in November, there will be monthly meetings/practice sessions after school in the media center.

Model United Nations

Mrs. SalernoModel United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an extra-curricular activity in which students typically roleplay delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. Thousands of middle school, high school, and college students across the country and around the world participate in Model United Nations, which involves substantial research, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, as well as critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.

The National Athletic Honor Society is a society for high school athletes with the mission of recognizing, supporting, and rewarding high school student-athletes who achieve excellence in the classroom and on the “field of play.”
What are the eligibility criteria for membership?
To be a Member, he/she must satisfy all three of the following eligibility criteria:
- a High School Student in a participating Member High School; maintains a cumulative 3.75 GPA;
- participates in a High School Varsity athletic program for at least two seasons (including, but not limited to, Archery, Baseball, Basketball, Bowling, Cheer/Spirit Squad, Cross Country/Track & Field, Dance, Drill, Equine Sports, Fencing, Field Hockey, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Lacrosse, Martial Arts, Rowing/Crew, Rugby, Skiing, Soccer, Softball, Swimming/Diving, Tennis, Volleyball, Water Polo, and Wrestling) is eligible for membership;
- all active members must complete at least five (5) hours of community service per school year.
Meetings: Monthly, the first Monday of each month, 7:30 am in room 110
Attendance: Members are required to attend our monthly meetings. If you are unable to attend the meeting, then you must let Coach Henry know ahead of time.

National English Honor Society (NEHS)

Secretary: Ava DubiszThe National English Honor Society (NEHS), founded and sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, is the only international organization exclusively for secondary students and faculty who, in the field of English, merit special note for past and current accomplishments. Individual secondary schools are invited to petition for a local chapter, through which individuals may be inducted into Society membership. Immediate benefits of affiliation include academic recognition, scholarship and award eligibility, and opportunities for networking with others who share enthusiasm for, and accomplishment in, the language arts.
Requirements:
- Dues paid
- Must attend at least 3 meetings per school year
- Must maintain a 3.0 GPA (unweighted) in all English courses
- If students drop below this GPA and wish to rejoin, they will have to repay the membership fee.
- Must participate in at least three activities a year
- One of the three activities per year must be literacy or writing based (not just donating or volunteering for ICC activities).
Dues: $20 new member; $5 returning member

Secretary:Membership in this chapter is an honor bestowed upon deserving students by the faculty and shall be based on the criteria of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.
- Candidates eligible for selection to this chapter must be members of the junior or senior class.
- To be eligible for selection for membership in this chapter, the candidate must have been in attendance for a period of one semester at Sun Valley High School.
- Candidates eligible for selection to the chapter shall have and maintain a 4.0 weighted GPA. This scholastic level of achievement shall remain fixed, and shall be the required minimum scholastic level of achievement for admission to candidacy.
- Upon meeting the grade level, attendance, and GPA standard requirements, candidates shall then be considered based on their service, leadership, and character.

Your service requirement as a member of the Spartan chapter of the National Honor Society will be due by the last day of each calendar month. RHO Kappa Honor Society

Mrs. BurkeRho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society is the only nationwide honors society that recognizes high school juniors and seniors that acknowledge quality in the field of Social Studies. Any accredited public or private high school can apply for a local chapter, through which individuals will be inducted into the Rho Kappa Honor Society. The Rho Kappa chapter at our school provides national recognition for outstanding students who are academically accomplished and encourages an interest in, understanding of, and appreciation for the importance of social studies.
Students who are interested in joining Rho Kappa must have completed 3 social studies classes with the expectation of completing 5. Students must have an unweighted G.P.A. of 3.0. Students are also required to have 10 service hours per year. Yearly dues are $20.00.
Students may pick up an application from Mr. Horne or Mrs. Burke.
Applications and dues need to be given to Mr. Horne before or after school.

Treasurer:The mission of “El Valle" Spanish Club is to help create an understanding of and promote enthusiasm for the various aspects of Spanish-speaking culture and language.
Students do not need to be in Spanish class or speak Spanish to join Spanish Club! Membership is open to any student who wishes to learn more about the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking culture.
There is a one-time $5.00 fee to help cover the expenses of the club.
Meetings: Meetings will be held in room 132 on Tuesdays from 3:05 until 4:45. Club meetings will be announced in class and on the announcements. -
