South Providence School student is honored for community service and helping peers

The John H. Crowder Award was presented to a junior at South Providence School during the Jan. 11 Board of Education meeting. Students who receive this award are not only academically successful but also have an established history of community service.

South Providence School StudentTyler Oakley has made great strides since starting at South Providence School. He took his first art class last year and found it to be a positive outlet for his feelings and expressing himself.  He is now focused on school and understands the importance of getting an education. He is committed to keeping his grades up and passing all of his classes.

Tyler also shows strong empathy toward his peers. He has learned from his own life and knows the importance of helping others when they are feeling down. Tyler frequently notices when his peers are distressed before others observe the situation. He is good at listening to students and helping them feel better.  If he feels it is serious, he will talk to the student about going to an adult.

Tyler often becomes a class ambassador of goodwill.  He can help defuse a negative situation with humor or bring a peer out of their shell.  He is the first to share what he has and enjoys giving to others. He is always pleasant with staff and helps them to find a reason to smile each day.  Tyler often assists staff around the building with any needs they have, whether it is carrying items to class or helping in the classroom.

Outside of school, Tyler has worked at his church barbeque to help raise money for mission trips by delivering meals to church members. Tyler also works with his youth group to prepare backpack snacks for needy children in the community. He has also participated in a yard cleanup for the elderly organized by his youth group. Tyler also helps his grandmother with yard work and other tasks. Recently, Tyler volunteered at Samaritan’s Purse and filled shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child.
