Union County Public Schools offer incentives to fill hard-to-staff positions
Union County Public Schools (UCPS) has announced a new recruitment and retention strategy to fill positions at four schools. During the Aug. 2 meeting, the Board of Education unanimously approved a strategic staffing initiative for East Union Middle, Health Sciences Academy at Monroe Middle, Forest Hills High and Monroe High.
“We have to think differently about recruitment and retention strategies to keep teachers in our schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Andrew Houlihan. “We recognize that teachers are considering other professions, but we need them and we want them to stay with Team UCPS.”
Current employees at the four schools who teach English/language arts, math, science and exceptional children classes will receive $4,000. The payments will be dispersed over 10 months during the 2022-2023 school year.
Prospective external candidates who are hired for the designated content areas at the four schools will receive $4,000. The payments will be distributed in two installments—$2,000 in December 2022 and $2,000 in June 2023. Candidates must be hired with a start date on or before Aug. 29.
The funding commitment for this strategic staffing initiative is only for the 2022-2023 school year. The district is supporting this initiative through ESSER III funding at a cost of $735,000.
