Double the joy: UCPS unveils Holiday Card Art Contest winners

On Nov. 22, Union County Public Schools (UCPS) celebrated the announcement of the winners of its 2024 Holiday Card Art Contest. The event highlighted the talent of students from across the district, showcasing the power of artistic expression and holiday spirit.

With 74 submissions from elementary students and 159 from secondary students, the contest saw an impressive 4,316 votes. Superintendent Dr. Andrew Houlihan expressed his pride in the students’ artwork, saying, "I am so excited to be here today to recognize the incredible talent of our students. These young artists are truly the best of the best, and we are so proud of all their hard work."

This year, the contest has two categories: one for elementary students and another for secondary students, which includes middle school and high school students. The top five finalists in each category were invited to showcase their work and explain what inspired their submissions.

Among the elementary finalists was Kiana Dadala, a second-grader from Rea View Elementary, whose snowman-themed artwork captured hearts. Kiana explained, "I wanted to draw a snowman painting. It’s a fun picture, and I hope everyone likes it."

Ari Mirochnik, a fifth grader from Kensington Elementary, impressed judges with a drawing of a cat gazing out a window, framed by Christmas tree branches. Ari shared, "I love drawing cats, especially black ones, and I thought it would be fun to mix that with a holiday scene."

Jennifer Briggs, a 12th grader from Marvin Ridge High, drew inspiration from the winter wildlife that graces North Carolina’s landscape. Her artwork, which featured four birds perched on a snow-covered tree branch, each wearing cozy winter accessories—a sweater, a hat, ear muffs, and a scarf—perfectly captured the warmth and charm of the season. "I wanted to create a fun winter scene with birds, incorporating the spirit of the holidays with their cozy outfits," Jennifer shared.

Anticipation filled the air as Dr. Houlihan announced the winning submissions.

Amelia Herndon, a fifth grader from Stallings Elementary, captured the essence of a snowy winter day in her winning piece. The illustration depicted a cardinal perched in a tree, while on the ground beneath it, a small bird looked up. In the background, two children happily built a snowman beside their house. The scene was filled with the magic of a snow-covered world, perfectly embodying the festive mood.

Allyson Jenkins, a 10th grader from Parkwood High, took the prize in the secondary category with her delightful watercolor pencil artwork. She depicted a beautifully decorated Christmas tree surrounded by four penguins dressed in festive hats and scarves, creating a whimsical and heartwarming holiday scene.

When asked about her reaction to winning, Amelia said, “I’m so excited! I didn’t expect to win, and I can’t wait to tell my class!” Allison, who has been drawing since childhood, also expressed excitement, saying, “It feels amazing! I love creating art, and winning this contest makes it even more special.”

Both winners received a framed copy of their artwork, a $100 gift card to Hobby Lobby and 25 cards and envelopes to share with family and friends. Their artwork will be featured and shared throughout the district’s communications platforms.

Dr. Houlihan congratulated all the students, saying, “You have shown incredible creativity, and it is inspiring to see your artwork shine. We are excited to share your talents with our community this holiday season.”
