Dylan Chavis (Porter Ridge High)

What do you teach and why did you become a teacher?

I teach social studies (World History and AP World). I became a teacher because I have a desire to teach young adults about history and how our world evolved to our current state of affairs. Additionally, I enjoy helping students navigate their high school experience, even when they are no longer in my class.

How do you show your school spirit?

I show my school spirit by being a proud alum of Porter Ridge schools and by sporting purple allbirds sneakers when I can. I also attend the events my students participate in and also am engaged in school- sponsored social events throughout the year.

What or who inspires you?

Success inspires me. Whether it is personal success, career success, or the personal/academic success of my current and former students.

In which other teacher’s class would you like to enroll for a day? Why?

I would love to enroll in any of Mr. Tyler Beard’s classes. He brings his courses to life through engaging activities. Plus, who wouldn’t want to see the Teacher of the Year in action?

What is one of your hidden talents?

I can play saxophone.

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

If I could pass on any wisdom to my students, it would be “This too shall pass.” Neither the bad moments (or good) are infinite.

What is a professional motto or quote that you “work” by?

A professional quote I live by is “One day at a time.” Take each day as it comes and tomorrow is a fresh start.

What do you enjoy most about working in UCPS?

I appreciate the teacher autonomy in UCPS and the community feeling from within the county.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

If I had a superpower, it would be to omnipotent. Essentially, unlimited power and the ability to do anything.
