What do you teach and why did you become a teacher?

When I was growing up in Taiwan, teachers were highly respected and held in high regard as valuable members of society. Many people aspired to become teachers, and it was a common dream job for many. It is a significant factor that inspired me to pursue a career in teaching.

How do you show your school spirit?

In addition to supporting school activities, I proactively promote Asian culture within our school community. For example, during the Chinese New Year, I organize activities like dumpling making to help my students explore Chinese culture and participate in traditional Chinese decorations throughout the school. Furthermore, I've had the privilege of inviting a lion dance performance group to our school, enhancing our Chinese New Year celebrations, and offering students an immersive cultural experience that fosters cross-cultural understanding.

What or who inspires you?

Throughout the various stages of my life, I have drawn inspiration from a multitude of individuals. When I was a child, my mother was my role model, encouraging me to be a good person and to become a teacher. During my college years, my professors played a crucial role in laying the foundations of my knowledge and shaping my academic pursuits. Later in life, my friends and colleagues have continued to inspire me, both personally and professionally. Moreover, my husband and my children have been a constant source of inspiration, motivating me to become a better human being and setting a positive example for them.

In which other teacher’s class would you like to enroll for a day? Why?

I would like to continue my previous thoughts by emphasizing that many teachers have significantly influenced me. I've found that I can benefit from each individual teacher, even when they have different teaching strategies and styles. Their diverse approaches to education have provided me with a well-rounded perspective and enriched my own teaching methods. This continuous exposure to various teaching techniques has allowed me to adapt and grow as an educator.

What is one of your hidden talents?

In my leisure moments, I enjoy playing the piano.

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

In our diverse world, a multitude of cultures coexist, each offering unique perspectives. Learning a foreign language opens new doors for students, enabling them to explore the world from different angles.

What is a professional motto or quote that you “work” by?

I have a deep love for both traveling and languages, and one quote that I love is by Rita Mae Brown: 'Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.' This quote beautifully expresses my belief that learning a foreign language is a pathway to understanding and connecting with different cultures.

This year, I initiated a pen pal activity between my 8th grade yearlong class and 8th grade students in Taiwan. Through verbal and written exchanges, as well as sharing our respective cultures, both sets of students gain firsthand insights from each other. It's truly heartwarming to witness the beauty of international friendships blossoming as a result of this exchange.

What do you enjoy most about working in UCPS?

I have a strong appreciation for the UCPS community. Within this network, I feel exceptionally supported by my colleagues, administrators, and parents. This supportive environment has not only allowed me to thrive but also enabled us to work together effectively for our students.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

If I had a superpower, I would choose to enhance the respect and recognition for the teaching profession. My vision is for students and parents to deeply value education within the school system. Education serves as the foundation for a nation's prosperity and progress. It plays a vital role in shaping the future strength of a country.
