Benton Heights Elementary and Sun Valley Middle earn Leader in Me Lighthouse status
Union County Public Schools is celebrating the accomplishments of two schools that have been named a Leader in Me Lighthouse School. Benton Heights Elementary and Sun Valley Middle now join more than 600 schools around the world as Lighthouse schools.

Energizing minds with new tools
Western Union Elementary is now Union County Public Schools' only school with a solar panel. It is also one of 10 schools in North Carolina to receive it. Principal Kristi Williford and a team of teachers have been on a mission to complete this project to provide added environmental education for their students

Union County's Behavioral Health Collaborative, a partnership between Union County Social Services and Union County Public Schools, has earned a Region of Excellence Award from Centralina Regional Council for COVID-19 Resiliency.

Finding her voice through a Talker
Mesoma "Mimi" Richard, a fifth-grader, has attended Poplin Elementary since kindergarten. She is well-known and well-liked by staff and students. This year is the most notable for everyone because it is the first time Mimi has had a voice. An iPad and an app have changed the way she interacts and communicates with others.

When seniors think about their options after graduation, many consider technical and trade school, the workforce, college or joining the military. On May 4, 10 Union County Public Schools seniors participated in Military Signing Day at Sun Valley High School, an annual tradition in which seniors from various UCPS schools are celebrated.

Superintendent's Art Showcase displays student talent
On May 10, Union County Public Schools hosted a reception for the Superintendent's Student Art Showcase. It's a long-standing district tradition that honors the artistic abilities of UCPS students. Schools from across the district submit artwork. Eighty-two pieces were submitted this year.
